Question 3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
When I was doing my research and planning for my products I made two plot ideas. I could not decide which plot idea was better, so I asked members of my target audience which of the two were better. I asked 3 people and I found out what they thought. Most of my audience said they preferred the 'Faces of Possession' plot idea as it was more original and unique idea as opposed to my other plot idea, 'Satanic Massacre', which was more generic and I was told that the idea of 'Satanic Massacre' was overdone. They also felt that the idea of 'Faces of Possession' would appeal more to my target audience, which is younger people, as the characters are young and relatable. The idea also seemed more realistic as it incorporated social realism, to the horror genre, which is stretching the boundaries of the genre. One of the audience members said that she liked the concepts as it would be a twist on the classic, she liked the idea that the character are going to be killed off one my one, almost like a slasher horror, but incorporating supernatural. She also told me that I need to make it more evident why and how the characters got into the disequilibrium situation anyway, and I took that advice and I feel like I have made this evident in my final trailer. Some of my audience told me that what type of characters I should include in my narrative, for example I was told that I should include a character that needs to get possessed, a leader, one that screams a lot etc. I believe that I have included these types of characters in my final narrative, which is evident from the trailer. The character of Sarita get possessed, Will is the lead, Johnny screams a lot.
After getting audience feedback on my plot ideas, the rest of my group and I combined our plots together to get one which the audience wanted and we decided on a final plot. After doing this I showed members of my target audience the final plot idea and asked them to choice a name most suitable for the film, from the list of names my group and I generated. We found that 'The Hunt' was the most popular name, so we decided to call it The Hunt. The name 'The Hunt' does represent the narrative very well, as the film is about a villain who hunts down a group of people. It is also conforms to standard horror film conventions as a lot of classic horror films have names like, 'The Exorcist, The Ring, ect. Because of this potential audiences will be able to identify that it is a horror film, and this will make horror audiences want to watch the film.
After choosing 'The Hunt' as the title, I created 3 different title ideas, by using horror style fonts, which I found online. The audience feedback I had for this was hard to analyse as the audience liked all the title ideas, which mean that I had to ask my group which one they preferred. I finally chose one. In the case of choosing a film title font, audience feedback was not very useful as I still could not decide which title to chose.
After doing my first draft I gave my target audience a questionnaire, which I generated. The questions I asked were, How old are you?, Where do you fit on the JICNAR scale? - These questions allowed me to identify whether or not the people I asked were in my target audience range, and most were. I asked the questions, What genre do you think my trailer is representing?, Do you think it fits with the conventions of the genre it is supposed to be representing?, What conventions of the genre dose it follow?, Does the music fit well with the genre?, What do you think the narrative is about?, What are the good things about my trailer?, What could be improved?. I asked all these questions to make sure that the genre of the film I was representing was recognizable, which means it will appeal to people who are fans of the horror genre. The overall response to the questions about the genre was positive, as everyone I asked were able to identify what genre it represented. This means that I have done a good job when it came to the representation of the horror genre. The type of horror conventions, according to my audience, that I followed were, costumes, music, narrative, setting, darkness, churches, blood, victims, possession, satanic symbols and others. The reason as to why I asked the audience what they thought the narrative was about was because I wanted to make sure my trailer was easy to follow and the narrative made sense and included both equilibrium events and disequilibrium events. I asked the audience what was good about my trailer, so I could keep the good things in the trailer when I re-edited it. The questions about the improvements helped me a lot when it came to re-editing my trailer as I added in a jump scare at the end of the trailer as that is something my target audience wanted.
I interviewed members of my target audience. I asked them overall what they thought of my trailer and they all said good things, like it looks professional and like a real trailer. I asked them about the genre and whether it fits expectations of the genre. All of them recognized that it was horror genre which is good as now I know that I have stuck to the conventions. I asked about my print products and what they would change, and some said that they would redo some of the photography. They all said that all the products fit together as they follow the same house styles.
